18 Gala Theme Ideas Your Guests Will Actually Get Excited About

Let’s be honest.

A great gala theme won’t magically double your fundraising.

But it can make your event more memorable, boost attendance, inspire sponsorships, and give your guests something to talk about long after the auction closes.

The best themes aren’t just pretty decorations, they become part of the story you’re telling. They influence everything from invitations and centerpieces to entertainment, auction packages, and even your Fund-A-Need appeal.

If you’re searching for inspiration, here are 18 gala themes that consistently create excitement and help nonprofits deliver an unforgettable evening.

1. Black & White Gala

If gala themes had a little black dress, this would be it.

Simple. Elegant. Timeless.

A black-and-white gala works for almost any nonprofit and nearly every budget. Crisp linens, dramatic lighting, formal attire, and clean décor create a sophisticated atmosphere without requiring over-the-top spending.

Bonus: every photo looks fantastic. Your marketing team will thank you later.

2. Hollywood Lights

Everyone enjoys feeling like a VIP.

Roll out the red carpet, add a few paparazzi photo stations, and let your supporters be the stars for the evening. Movie-themed signage, award-style presentations, and glamorous entertainment make donors feel celebrated, which is exactly how your biggest supporters should feel.

3. A Night Beneath the Stars

Few themes create an atmosphere as effortlessly as this one.

Twinkle lights, candlelight, hanging lanterns, and celestial décor can transform almost any venue into something magical. Whether you’re indoors or outside, this theme feels elegant without feeling complicated.

Sometimes less really is more.

4. Garden Party

Garden Party benefit auction fundraiser

Perfect for spring and summer fundraisers.

Fresh florals, lush greenery, string lights, and farm-to-table cuisine create an inviting environment where guests naturally relax and enjoy themselves. It’s especially fitting for healthcare, environmental, and community organizations.

Mother Nature makes a pretty good event designer.

5. Roaring ’20s

The Great Gatsby never really goes out of style.

Art Deco décor, champagne towers, jazz music, feathers, pearls, and gold accents create an atmosphere that’s energetic and luxurious. Guests love dressing for the occasion, and themed attire instantly raises the excitement level before they even arrive.

6. Mardi Gras or Carnival

This theme practically guarantees your event won’t feel stuffy.

Whether you lean toward New Orleans jazz and Cajun cuisine or vibrant Rio-inspired entertainment, colorful décor and lively music create a high-energy evening that encourages guests to participate. And, it perfectly aligns on the calendar with the spring fundraising season, so it doesn’t feel forced.

7. Masquerade Ball

A little mystery goes a long way.

Elegant masks, candlelight, jewel tones, and dramatic décor create an unforgettable evening. Guests enjoy becoming part of the experience instead of simply attending another formal dinner.

8. A Night in Paris

Romantic. Sophisticated. Universally appealing.

French cafés, Eiffel Tower centerpieces, candlelight, champagne, and soft music transport guests to the City of Light without leaving town. It’s refined without feeling pretentious.

9. Around the World

benefit auction travel package station

Perfect for organizations with global reach or simply adventurous donors.

Create themed food stations, entertainment, and décor representing different countries. This theme also pairs beautifully with a Vacation Station featuring travel packages in your silent auction, big board, or “buy now” prices.

10. Decades Night

Pick a decade and let nostalgia do some of the heavy lifting.

Whether it’s the ’60s, ’70s, or ’80s, guests love dressing up and reminiscing. Music becomes easy. Decorations become fun. And the dance floor usually takes care of itself. The photos and social sharing will echo for weeks.

11. Into the Blue

Blue themed nonprofit gala

Modern. Clean. Sophisticated.

Using layered shades of blue creates a polished, upscale look without overwhelming your venue. It’s minimalist elegance that’s especially popular with younger professional audiences.

12. Harvest & Gratitude

Ideal for fall galas.

Rich autumn colors, seasonal menus, and rustic elegance naturally reinforce a message of thankfulness. It’s an easy theme to tie into donor appreciation while creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

13. Enchanted Forest

Bring the outdoors inside.

Moss, branches, fairy lights, and woodland textures create an immersive experience that’s especially fitting for conservation, wildlife, and environmental organizations.

14. Once Upon a Time

benefit auction gala fairy tail theme

Storybook magic works especially well for children’s charities and literacy organizations.

Whimsical décor, castles, and fairy tale details remind guests that every nonprofit is helping write someone else’s happy ending.  Encourage your guests to dress the part for some amazing photos.

15. A Night on Broadway

Cue the spotlight.

Marquee signs, theatrical performances, dramatic lighting, and show-stopping entertainment make this an excellent fit for arts organizations, schools, and education nonprofits.

16. Wonders of the Ocean

Perfect for marine conservation, science, or environmental organizations.

Ocean blues, coral-inspired centerpieces, flowing fabrics, and underwater lighting effects create an immersive atmosphere while naturally reinforcing your mission. Dress it up, make it academic or have fun with a throwback. I can’t help but think of Michael J Fox at the Enchantment under the Sea Dance.

17. Carnival of Dreams

Think more Cirque du Soleil, and less county fair (that could be a fun theme for the right organization).

Elegant performers, rich colors, creative entertainment, and elevated carnival-inspired food create an evening that’s playful while still feeling upscale.

18. Roots & Wings

Some of the best gala themes aren’t about décor at all, they’re about honoring your mission and communicating your impact on the community you serve.

Roots & Wings celebrates both where people come from and what’s possible because of your organization’s work. It’s particularly meaningful for youth development, mentoring, education, and community organizations. Let’s celebrate what you have done, and where you wings will take you next.

A Few Final Thoughts

Whatever theme you choose, commit to it.

Carry it through your invitations, décor, menu, entertainment, auction displays, stage design, and even your live program and fundraising. When every detail supports the same story, guests become immersed in the experience—and immersed guests are far more likely to become generous donors.

One more tip: don’t settle for generic names.

Instead of simply calling your event Masquerade Ball, give it a title like Behind the Mask or Unmasking Potential. A memorable event name is easier to market, easier to remember, and feels uniquely yours.

At the end of the day, your gala theme isn’t about decorating a ballroom.

It’s about creating an experience people want to be part of.

Because nobody has ever driven home saying, “Wow…those chair covers changed my life.”

But they have driven home talking about how your event made them feel.

If you liked what you heard and need an auctioneer or Emcee for your next event, let’s talk about it. You can get a quote or just book a 6 minute chat to talk about how your gala could increase revenue and engagement.

Jake and his team were absolutely incredible at our ADL Fur Ball event. The energy they brought to the room was unmatched! They kept the audience engaged, excited, and ready to give. Working with them was seamless from start to finish, and their professionalism truly elevated the entire night. We’re so grateful for their contribution and can’t wait to work with Jake again for future events. Highly recommend!

  • Lily O. – Animal Defense League of San Antonio

We retained Jake for our first Henry’s Hope Gala benefiting the Houston Chapter of the Star Legacy Foundation. He was a key contributor to our success—both financially and in connecting effectively with guests. Before the event, Jake spent meaningful time reviewing our goals, run-of-show, paddle-raise strategy, and auction items, offering guidance while honoring our team’s direction. At the Gala, he maximized paddle-raise support, drove live-auction bidding, and smoothly handled an item that fell short of its minimum. We highly recommend Jake Addams.

Absolutely amazing!! We were so thrilled with what Jake brought to our auction. He was charismatic, funny and serious when needed. Without his expertise before and during our event – we would not have raised as much money. He raised the bar higher than we could have done it alone. Not enough words to say how much we appreciated him.

  • Beveryly B. – Canyon Lake Animal Shelter

We hired Jake to be the auctioneer at our fantasy football draft and he was outstanding. He was on time, prepared, and perfectly fit the bill of what we were hoping for in a certified auctioneer. We will be definitely be asking him back next year!

  • Scott K.

Jake was an event saver! Jake was so fantastic! From the first call it was obvious that he was enthusiastic about his craft. He is very organized and his attention to detail was amazing. This was our first time hosting this event and Jake helped guide us through so many decisions. I don’t know what we would’ve done without him! His auctioneering was also fantastic. I had so many people come up to me afterwards to talk about how great of an auctioneer he is – funny, lively, and creative! If you need someone for your event, Jake is the guy!

  • Caitlin P. – St. Stephen’s Episcopal School

THE perfect touch to our National Event hosted by Texas for the Saleen Club of America. Jake was EXACTLY what I was looking for, with all the BIG Texas Charm and personality I wanted. Our event was a HUGE success and many thanks to Jake and his team for helping make that happen. I hope I get to have him join us again and if you’re looking for THAT perfect finishing touch, please give him a call.

  • Pam P. – Saleen Club of America

We were thrilled to have Jake on our team for our school’s annual Spring Party! From the start, he was eager to collaborate, meeting with us multiple times throughout the planning process to fine-tune event details, share expert auction strategies, and ensure our live program would be engaging and successful.

On the day of the event, Jake arrived early and managed his team flawlessly. His auctioneers were professional, skilled, and knew exactly how to maximize bids. Thanks to Jake’s expertise, we estimate that our live auction raised 25-30% more than it would have on our own.

Thank you, Jake—we truly appreciate your hard work and hope to partner with you again next year!

How much does an auctioneer cost?

If you are reading this hoping for a hard number, as if all auctioneers are the same, I am sorry to disappoint you. However, if you want to know how a benefit auctioneer will calculate the price of his or her services, then you are in the right place. There are many factors that go into pricing when it comes to an auctioneer, and I am happy to decode some of that mystery, so you know what you are getting into.

These are some of the most common factors that affect the price of an auctioneer. Audience size, day of the week, experience/skill of the auctioneer, travel considerations, and the pay plan. Let’s look at each of these factors separately.

How does the size of the audience affect auctioneer pricing?

The auctioneer can only collect money from bids and donations they can see. Large crowds need more staff and ringmen to effectively relay bids to the auctioneer and field questions from the audience. Most auctioneers will bring on a ringman for each 100 people (10 tables) in your event. Consider each 100 guests as an additional ringman for the evening.

You might be thinking, “they only work for 30 minutes for the live auction though? Why do they affect the overall cost so much?” Professional ringmen are dedicated to their craft and work on their skills relentlessly. They assist the auctioneer before the live program, help to plan the execution of the auction and appeal, scout out the biggest donors, greet and talk with guests, and do other tasks behind the scenes before the auction begins. During the auction, each ringman is capable of bringing in thousands of dollars in additional donations and sales by relaying the bids to the auctioneer, keeping the bidders engaged, and encouraging guests to bid again and again. They also sell packages after the auction to bidders who did not win to increase the night’s take.

If your event is expecting 300-400 people, the price for your auctioneer will include the costs of hiring 3-4 additional ringmen. The cost of each ringman will vary depending on their experience and skill level. The nightly rate will range from $0 (for beginners learning the trade) to $500 or more for the best in the business. 1 great ringman in the crew can easily add $1000’s to the live auction revenue.

Which day of the week is cheaper to hire an auctioneer?

Fridays and Saturdays are in high demand and will cost more than an event held on a Wednesday. Depending on the auctioneer, a weekday event can get a 20% – 50% discount compared to their Friday / Saturday night rates. If you book an auctioneer on a weekday within a few weeks of the event, sometimes you can get a great rate because they just want to fill their calendar. Other auctioneers will charge a premium for a last minute booking. That will be case by case with each auctioneer you talk to.

What’s the price difference between a new auctioneer and an experienced professional?

This is a competitive business, where new auctioneers are struggling to book each event. A new auctioneer might do it for free for the experience. Maybe they will ask for dinner or for new head shots from your photographer. These auctioneers are not confident enough to guarantee results. They do not have the experience and intuition while working the crowd. They don’t know when to raise the bids faster or slower. They probably don’t have much talent working the crowd and building rapport on stage. And almost certainly, they lack the skills to deliver an emotionally compelling paddles up appeal to your donors that brings in biggest money of the night. If your goal for the night is to raise less than $20,000, it may make sense to work with a new auctioneer. You don’t have as much at stake compared to the organizations with a goal of $250,000 for the night.

An experienced benefit auctioneer knows how to develop your live program from beginning to end. They have experience working with the speakers in the live program. An experienced auctioneer will help you optimize the on site activations, fundraising games, raffles and silent auctions. They know how to connect with the audience to get the most money for you auction items. More importantly, they can bring in many times the auction revenue in pure giving during the paddles fundraising appeal. Investing in a professional benefit auctioneer will yield many times their cost when you tally the numbers at the end of the night. It’s one of the best ROI investments for most organizations for the entire year. An experienced auctioneer, who includes fundraising consulting services before the event will charge between $1500 to $15,000 or even more depending on the size of the event, scope of the services involved and size of the crew required to execute a exceptional live program.
